Happy 40th Birthday, Baby-Sitters Club!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Baby-Sitters Club, I share a fan letter I wrote to Ann M. Martin back in 1990!

Happy 40th Birthday, Baby-Sitters Club!
Holding my original edition of "Kristy's Great Idea", by Ann M. Martin

Kristy's Great Idea, the first book in the Baby-Sitters Club series, was published in August of 1986. Now here we are, forty years later, and this series is as popular as ever, with new graphic novels, a Netflix series and more!

I've been a fan of the series since the beginning, and I still have nearly all the books (including the Super Specials and Mysteries!) on a shelf in our office. What's even more amazing is that I'm able to share the series with my kiddo, who enjoys them as much as I did!

Here's "Kristy's Great Idea" in its graphic novel version!

To celebrate, I'm sharing a draft of a letter I wrote to Ann M. Martin in February of 1990. At the time, the series was only about four years old, and yet it was so popular that young readers like me were compelled to write letters (by the thousands!) to connect with the woman behind the books.

I found the draft in the back of a pink spiral-bound notebook with lots of other doodles and snippets. (I also found a draft of a fan letter to Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block. Stay tuned for that one!)

What's super cool is that in July of 1990, I got a letter BACK. It was typed and printed on one of those scrolls of printer paper with the perforated holes on the side, you know what I mean? You printed it out and then had to tear off the edges and separate the individual sheets. It had my name and address typed at the top, and what follows is two pages of info about her life, things she enjoys, how she comes up with ideas for writing and for the BSC, plus a whole pages of writing tips!

Even if she had this pre-written for her myriad fans, it meant SO much to get this letter from her. She was a celebrity to me, after all! It even looks like she really signed it!
