Mom Needs a Coke

It's the summer of 1989 and we're heading out on a road trip!

Mom Needs a Coke

One of the ways I kept myself company on long car rides was by writing profusely in my spiral bound notebook. I didn't always have great revelations to share, but I did write down what I heard and observed, which looking back translates into a slice of life that wouldn't have been captured otherwise.

The journal I'm beginning to share today has a great many of those slices, all from the summer of 1989.

The first couple of entries begin with a day at a town-wide festival called "Crazy Dayz" (z intentional), which turned out to be a bit of a bust due to rain. Then we set off on a four-hour drive to Grandma's house in Northwest Iowa, which began with my mom needing to stop at the Hardees on the edge of town to get a Coke. With four kids in the backseat, I can't blame her.

Check out this video where I read the entry aloud with my added quips and thoughts about my ten-year-old self, or if you're an Official Club Member or BFF, sign in to read the actual, hand-written journal below and see for yourself!

The small town of Winterset, Iowa, didn't always have a lot going on, but it was a great place to grow up. And it's not necessarily a bad thing that I had to make my own excitement. It was great fodder for creativity after all, with no smart phones around. (We did eventually get a GameBoy, which we had to share amongst the four kids on those long car rides. Our individual turns were never long enough...).
