The Life of a Teen in the 90s

The Life of a Teen in the 90s

In today's journal entry from 1991, I declare myself SO busy as a teen in the 90s that I'm absolutely exhausted! What's hilarious is that when I wrote this entry I wasn't even technically a teen yet. I was still 12, just shy of turning 13 by about two and a half months.

Yet I ignore that small fact for dramatic effect, and declare that I was too exhausted (after all the busy-ness) to go to a basketball game that night. I admit that not going to the game isn't good for my social life, since I have adopted this idea that I need to be social in order to get boys to like me.

Anyone reading this: let's PLEASE help the younger generation (and ourselves) disband this social construct. I'm still trying to do undo that idea now, aware of all kinds of pressure from social media and other places to get out and be social when all I really want to do is stay home and read my book and eat chips and dip. I don't suppose I could be super cool if I just did that all day? I submit for consideration that there is! Let's all try it!

But for the moment, enjoy this snippet from my childhood and be sure to sign in to share your thoughts.

Support That Was Rad

For today's journal prompt, I'd love to hear what you felt you needed to do, if anything, to be socially accepted at school. Did you feel like you needed to go to sporting events, like I did, in order to be cool and "visible"? Was it band? Art? Music? Gosh, I hope so. That would be amazing. I can't wait to read your thoughts. Sign in to share!

You're so rad,
Sarah
