What I Got My Mom for Her 40th Birthday

I only had $23 to buy my mom a birthday present and a list of ten things I wanted to get, so I turned to "Dad Incorporated" for help.

What I Got My Mom for Her 40th Birthday

Today's post comes from December 15, 1991. I am twelve years old and trying to do two things: finish writing in all the pages of the journal by the end of the year, and figure out how to buy my mom a birthday present with the $23 I have leftover from holiday shopping. If I've done the math right, this is going to be my mom's 40th birthday(!), so I'm definitely trying to plan something fun.

I realize my $23 isn't going to buy her the long list of things I'd like to get, nor will it fund the "women's night" I want to treat her to with all her friends, so I turn to something I call, "Dad Inc.", from which I plan to get a literal blank check. Ha! If only.

I mention "Dad Inc" a couple of times in this entry, and it's one of the first times I notice myself joking intentionally in my journal. Who am I trying to make laugh? Maybe just me? Do I suppose someone else might be reading this some day? Whatever the reason, I'm trying out some light comedy, and that's incredibly endearing to me.

Enjoy today's video read aloud, as well as the pics of the actual entry!

For today's journal prompt, I'd love to hear about how you celebrated your parents when you were a kid. Did you buy them presents for their birthdays or holidays? Do you remember when your parents turned 40? I remember when my dad turned 40 we had a whole thing with black balloons and an "Over the Hill" theme. As someone who's somewhere in her 40s, I'm really glad that's not the vibe anymore. Ha.

Whether you share your entry with me or not, take some time this weekend to write down some thoughts or memories. It doesn't have to be long or even well-written. It's a great analog activity to do to take a break from all these devices (I say cheekily as I type and share this on a digital device). You know what? I'll take some time to write in my journal, too, because writing in a journal isn't just for kids!

Stay rad,
Sarah
